Bald Eagles on the James River

Last week I was fortunate to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to photograph Bald Eagles, Great Blue Herons and Ospreys along Virginia’s James River near Richmond. My wife Pam and I were in Virginia to attend an artist’s reception for one of her wildlife paintings that was being exhibited at the International Guild of Realism show in Alexandria (

I took a morning for myself by driving down to the James River and met Captain Mike of Discover The James tours. Shortly after dawn, we embarked on a 4-hour tour up and down the river looking for eagles. Mike has been conducting these tours for many years and knows where to spot the eagles in each of their 4 or 5 separate “territories.” Along the way, we spotted several Ospreys and Great Blue Herons which added to the enjoyment. If you’re ever near Richmond, make it a point to join Mike on one of his tours. Even if you’re not a photographer, you’ll be able to see wild Bald Eagles in their natural environment. It is awe inspiring.
